Title: Nigerian Railway Faces Growing Threat from Vandalism

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has expressed deep concern over the escalating vandalism of its critical electrical and signaling installations along major corridors, including Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, and Warri-Itakpe. This disturbing trend poses a significant threat to the safety and efficiency of train operations across these regions.

In a statement released by Mr. Callistus Unyimadu, the Chief Public Relations Officer for NRC, on October 11, 2025, the corporation detailed how this malicious activity threatens its ability to deliver secure and effective rail services. The Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, underscored these concerns in Lagos, calling attention to what he described as an urgent issue requiring immediate action.

The gravity of the situation was further highlighted by recent arrests made in connection with a significant incident at the Rigasa Train Station area in Kaduna. Two young men, aged 22 and 24, were apprehended following the discovery of severed and stolen cable wire from an NRC crane on October 10, around midday. Acting on intelligence provided by diligent operatives of the Nigeria Police Railway Command attached to the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), a patrol team led by ASP Abdullahi Bwajin successfully tracked down and arrested these suspects shortly after the incident.

During interrogation, both individuals confessed to their involvement in the crime, revealing that they sold the stolen cable to an individual known as “Musa Major” for ₦90,000. Each suspect took home ₦30,000 from this illicit transaction, while another accomplice linked to the act remains at large.

Dr. Opeifa’s statement emphasized the critical nature of these attacks on railway infrastructure. Describing these facilities as essential national assets, he declared such acts as economic sabotage and assured that offenders would face severe legal repercussions. Collaborating closely with security agencies, efforts are underway to capture the remaining suspect and recover the stolen materials.

The NRC expressed gratitude toward the Nigeria Police Railway Command for their professionalism in handling the situation swiftly and effectively. Dr. Opeifa reassured the public that all those involved would be held accountable under the law.

In his appeal, Dr. Opeifa called upon communities hosting railway facilities to play a proactive role in protecting these vital installations. He stressed that safeguarding the railway system is not only crucial for its operational success but also as a catalyst for community development and improved livelihoods. Therefore, he urged residents to view the protection of railway infrastructure as a collective responsibility.
