Traffic Stop Leads to Firearm Charges in Sarnia
In a recent incident that highlights the vigilance of law enforcement and underscores the ongoing issue of firearm-related offenses, Sarnia police have reported a significant development following a routine traffic stop. On the evening of October 8, 2025, around 11:30 p.m., police officers noticed a pickup truck with license plates that had been reported stolen. The vehicle was spotted traveling along London Road, west of East Street. Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, which was parked for this purpose, law enforcement discovered a loaded 12-gauge, pump-action shotgun along with twenty-two shotgun shells. The firearm’s condition raised immediate concerns; it was found with its safety off and its serial number defaced, both indicators of illicit intentions or actions.
The arrest that followed led to the charging of a 23-year-old Sarnia resident. He now faces multiple charges: possession of property obtained by crime valued under $5,000, unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless transportation of a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and knowingly having a defaced serial number on the firearm. The gravity of these offenses was reflected in the court’s decision to remand him into custody following his bail hearing.
This incident follows closely another concerning event where Sarnia police apprehended a teenager involved in a separate firearms-related offense. On the night of October 7, a young individual reportedly approached a couple, who had just departed from a social gathering on Exmouth Street with intentions of confrontation. When they refused to be driven to another address for an unspecified altercation, the youth allegedly pointed a black pistol at them before fleeing in their vehicle. The incident left them fearing for their safety and prompted immediate police involvement.
The suspect was apprehended later that night by law enforcement officers who acted swiftly on the information provided by the victims. Despite extensive searches, no weapon has been recovered from the scene or linked directly to the suspect. However, based on available evidence, a 17-year-old Sarnia resident faces several charges, including assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon without authorization, and failure to comply with a release order. As per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, his identity cannot be disclosed publicly.
