Preventing a Terrorist Plot Against Belgium’s Prime Minister
In the early morning hours, Belgian authorities apprehended three young suspects involved in an alleged plot to attack Bart De Wever, the country’s Prime Minister. The operation was thwarted thanks to timely intelligence and police intervention.
The trio, aged 18, 23, and 24, were arrested on charges of attempted murder and involvement with a yihadi terrorist group. Ann Fransen, the leading prosecutor, confirmed that during a search at one of the suspects’ residences, law enforcement discovered explosives loaded onto a drone intended for use in the attack. Additionally, steel balls, commonly utilized as shrapnel in such attacks, were also found.
In another location, authorities uncovered a 3D printer believed to have been used to produce components related to the planned operation. The prosecutor indicated that the suspects aimed to utilize the drone to attach the explosive payload. These discoveries underscore the evolving nature of terrorist threats and the technological means employed by extremists.
The arrests were executed following an anti-terrorism judge’s order for a search, supported by bomb-sniffing dogs. The investigation revealed plans targeting politicians, though specific names were not disclosed initially. However, media reports suggest that Bart De Wever was among those considered potential targets.
Mathieu Bihet, Belgium’s Energy Minister, expressed support for the Prime Minister and emphasized that terrorism remains a persistent threat to democracy, necessitating ongoing vigilance and action against it.
In 2025 alone, Belgian authorities initiated approximately 80 new investigations related to terrorism, surpassing the total cases recorded in the previous year. This statistic illustrates a concerning trend of increasing terror-related activities within Europe.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of international cooperation and intelligence-sharing in preventing such heinous acts. Belgium’s swift response showcases its commitment to maintaining national security and protecting democratic values from extremist ideologies.
