Western Trust begins new planning for future health services in Fermanagh and west Tyrone
Western Trust Chief Executive Neil Guckian admits there were “flaws”
and we should have spent more time engaging with the local community.
The formal closure of its public consultation on changes to emergency general surgery (EGS) services at South West Acute Hospital marks a new chapter in Northern Ireland’s healthcare landscape. The Western Health Trust is now embarking upon an ambitious project, which aims not just for sustainability but also transformative change within Fermanagh and west Tyrone.
Engagement Flaws Highlighted
Chief Executive Neil Guckian acknowledged the significant flaws that marred their previously rushed consultation process: “The previous process from public’s perspective felt rushed,” he said. He added to this, expressing regret over inadequate community engagement before launching consultations in December 2022—an action deemed as premature and resulting in much anxiety.
A Fresh Vision for Health
In response to these missteps—and with an eye towards future-proofing healthcare provision—the Western Trust has committed itself fully into a new phase of planning. This involves collaboration not only within its own staff, but also incorporating the invaluable input from trade unions; elected representatives and community groups such as Save Our Acute Services (SOAS); while simultaneously exploring potential synergy work with Health Service Executive in Ireland.
Increased Collaboration
Collaboration is set to be a cornerstone principle going forward. Sinn Fein MP Pat Cullen expressed her approval of ending this flawed consultation, stressing however on an immediate update from the Trust—a sentiment echoed by Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Jemma Dolan who also called for transparency regarding recruitment efforts.
Continued Commitment Despite Shortcomings
In what may be a controversial move but one that seems in line with improving patient outcomes—Neil Guckian reaffirmed, “the clinical pathways…are monitored carefully.”
Future Health: A Plan Yet Unpublished
As the Trust embarks upon this new phase of planning—a Vision for Future Health and Care Services—it is important to note its temporary suspension continues. However independent analysis shows promise with improvements in emergency general surgery outcomes since a change was implemented.
While it’s too early yet, we eagerly await more details from Neil Guckian who promises an urgent update on their plans—plans that are set not only for the future but also aimed at alleviating any anxieties felt by constituents today. The Western Trust remains steadfast to its promise of delivering high-quality health services in Northern Ireland and now looks forward with renewed hope towards a better tomorrow.
