Mayor of Kiffa Inspects Rainwater Drainage Points in Keihidi
In the heart of Mauritania, a significant event unfolded as Mayor Mohamed El-Khatir Ben Abdou of Kiffa embarked on an inspection tour across Keihidi to assess and oversee the management of rainwater drainage points. This visit was aimed at understanding the ongoing efforts in handling excessive rainfall, which recently surpassed 135mm, causing considerable disruption in several neighborhoods including Toldeh, Wndama, and the Central Market.
The proactive stance taken by local authorities underscores a comprehensive emergency response initiative led by Kiffa’s regional committee, with Mayor El-Khatir at its helm. The delegation included key figures such as the Governor of Keihidi, Ahmed Salem Ben Bell; Head of Kiffa Region, Ba Amadou Aboua; and Deputy Mayor of Keihidi, Abo Siseh, alongside law enforcement representatives.
Mohammed Sidahmed Diddi, the regional delegate for Water and Sanitation Affairs, highlighted that this inspection was part of a strategic response to monitor on-ground conditions directly. The initiative aimed not only at assessing but also facilitating the drainage processes from roads and residences heavily affected by the rains. This endeavor has significantly reduced water accumulation in neighborhoods like Kebleh and Wndama, with efforts largely completed except for minor points in central Toldeh.
As Diddi noted, thanks to concerted efforts involving national sanitation offices and civil protection units—supported robustly by Kiffa’s local governance—the task is nearing completion. The teams are set to finalize the mission within a day or two, God willing.
This narrative of resilience and community response in Keihidi highlights how coordinated government action can effectively manage natural challenges. It exemplifies the crucial role of leadership in ensuring public safety and urban functionality during environmental adversities.
By fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, this initiative not only mitigates immediate flooding risks but also strengthens infrastructure readiness for future occurrences. This event serves as a testament to Mauritania’s commitment to adaptive governance and civic welfare.
