The incident took place in Puerto Aysén and marked a harrowing episode for the local community.

On December 30, 2022, around 4:00 PM, Moraga Castillo discharged a firearm against another individual, resulting in severe injuries to the pelvis that could have been fatal without prompt medical attention. The court, through its unanimous decision (case number 144-2024), adjudged him guilty of attempted homicide and illegal possession of weapons. Judges Patricio Zúñiga Valenzuela, Rosalía Mansilla Quiroz, and Carlos Astudillo Cerda presided over the case.

Luis Andrés Moraga Castillo received a sentence totaling 11 years and three days in prison. This includes eight years for attempted homicide and an additional three years for illegal possession of weapons. Moreover, he faces permanent legal consequences, including absolute perpetual disqualification from public offices or positions and political rights, along with the suspension of holding any titled profession during his incarceration.

The ruling also mandated genetic profiling and the inclusion of Moraga Castillo’s DNA in the national database of convicted criminals once the sentence is executed. Furthermore, a Taurus pistol, ammunition magazine, and cartridges seized during the investigation were ordered to be confiscated by the court.

This case underscores the judiciary’s firm stance against violence and illegal activities involving firearms. It reflects broader societal concerns about safety and the rule of law in regions like Puerto Aysén, where such incidents threaten community tranquility and security.

The narrative surrounding this legal resolution not only highlights the punitive measures for those who engage in criminal conduct but also serves as a cautionary tale emphasizing the importance of adhering to laws designed to safeguard citizens. As communities rally around the principles of justice and safety, this case stands as a testament to the enduring efforts of law enforcement and judicial bodies to uphold peace and order.
