Governor Visits Water Pumping Stations in Kehdi City Amidst Flooding

In a proactive effort to address the severe flooding that struck Kehdi city, Governor of the Kerkouk region, Mr. Mohammed Al-Makhtar Ibn Abdi, embarked on an inspection tour of several water pumping stations across various neighborhoods including Touldh, Wndama, and the central market area. This visit, conducted on Tuesday, October 6th, 2025, aimed to assess the operational status of these critical facilities in mitigating the effects of heavy rainfall that had exceeded 135 millimeters.

The governor’s visit was part of a broader initiative led by the regional emergency committee under his chairmanship. The objective was to closely monitor the situation in neighborhoods severely affected by torrential rains and ensure efficient water drainage from roads and homes impacted by flooding.

In statements released by the Mauritania Agency for News (AMI), Mr. Said Mohammed Al-Asa Siddi, Deputy Governor of Water and Sanitation Affairs, emphasized that the inspection was crucial to evaluate on-the-ground efforts deployed since the onset of this crisis. The primary focus was on neighborhoods like Kbba, Wndama, and the central market area, along with the central region of Touldh.

Mr. Siddi noted that due to diligent work, water removal operations were nearing completion, with almost all areas in Kbba and Wndama cleared. Only a few spots remained in central Touldh. He expressed gratitude for divine assistance and highlighted ongoing efforts by teams from the National Office for Sanitation and Civil Protection, supported by the Kerkouk authority, to expedite intervention processes. Completion of these tasks was anticipated within one or two days.

Accompanying Governor Al-Makhtar during this inspection were key officials including the Mayor of Kehdi district, Mr. Ahmed Salem Ibn Beil, President of the Kerkouk region, Mr. Ba Amadu Abua, and Deputy Mayor of Kehdi municipality, Mr. Abu Sicseh. Security forces were also present to ensure a coordinated response.

This visit underscores a concerted governmental effort to enhance disaster management capabilities in Mauritania, ensuring that communities impacted by natural calamities receive timely support and relief. As the region continues to develop infrastructure capable of withstanding such environmental challenges, this event marks a significant step towards sustainable urban planning and resilience against climate-induced adversities.

The proactive approach taken by Kerkouk’s leadership not only alleviates immediate distress but also sets a precedent for future disaster preparedness. The collaborative spirit among governmental bodies, emergency services, and local authorities serves as a beacon of hope for affected residents, promising a safer and more secure environment amidst the unpredictable nature of weather patterns.
