A Historic Shift: Rochester Christian University Welcomes Its First Non-Church of Christ President
In a landmark event, Rochester Christian University (RCU) is set to inaugurate its 11th president, Reggies Wenyika, on October 24. This inauguration marks a significant moment in the university’s history as it welcomes its first leader not directly affiliated with the Churches of Christ fellowship.
The transition from Brian Stogner, who served nearly nine years before resigning last December, to Wenyika has been carefully orchestrated since June 1. Reggies Wenyika brings a rich background in educational leadership, having previously led Ottawa University and Southwestern Christian University. His diverse affiliations reflect an expansive view of faith-based education.
The investiture ceremony is part of the university’s homecoming festivities, beginning with a Community Blessing Service on October 23 at Westside Central Chapel. The official event will take place the following day in the Alumni Center. This transition highlights RCU’s dedication to embracing leadership that aligns with its core values while respecting its roots.
Reggies Wenyika’s appointment is particularly noteworthy as he represents a departure from tradition, being the first president among universities associated with Churches of Christ not to be a member of the fellowship himself. In his dialogue with Lora Hutson for RCU’s North Star magazine, Wenyika expressed a deep familiarity and respect for the Stone-Campbell theological heritage—a reflection of the institution’s historical values.
The Chair of the RCU board of trustees, Richard Watson, emphasized that while Church of Christ membership remains integral to their history, it is not the sole criterion for leadership. The focus lies on finding leaders who embody a faith-based and Christ-centered ethos that propels the university forward without being constrained by past affiliations.
Under Wenyika’s presidency, RCU continues its mission as a unique institution among Christian colleges, committed to discerning God’s will through its history while forging a distinct identity. With an educational background spanning from Oral Roberts University to Chinhoyi University of Technology in Zimbabwe, Wenyika exemplifies the global and inclusive vision that RCU aspires to uphold.
This milestone at Rochester Christian University symbolizes both continuity and change—a celebration of heritage and an embrace of a diverse future. As RCU steps into this new chapter, it remains dedicated to its mission of informing, inspiring, and uniting students under the banner of faith-based education.
