Jazz in Transition: Spotlight on Vail, Newport, and Denver Festivals
Jazz News Highlights 2025
The vibrant landscape of jazz continues to evolve with significant announcements and events that shape its future. In this edition, we explore the latest developments at iconic festivals and feature artists who are redefining the genre.
Vail Jazz Festival: A Legacy Continues in 2026
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, Vail has long been a haven for jazz enthusiasts. Celebrating its 30th anniversary of the Vail Jazz Workshop this summer, the festival has nurtured over 300 young musicians who delve into improvisation, theory, and performance. These students have the unique opportunity to showcase their skills at the main stage during the annual Vail Jazz Festival. As the 2025 season concludes, preparations are already underway for the 32nd festival scheduled from September 4-6, 2026. This Labor Day Weekend event promises a blend of world-class performances and community engagement.
Newport Jazz Festival: A New Chapter After Christian McBride
On October 3, 2025, Newport celebrated George Wein’s centennial, the visionary founder of its renowned jazz festival. Wein’s legacy continued under the leadership of Christian McBride, who took over as Artistic Director in 2015. McBride’s tenure was marked by a commitment to honoring jazz traditions while embracing contemporary sounds. However, in September 2025, he announced his resignation. Reflecting on his contributions, McBride expressed gratitude and pride for his role in shaping the festival’s direction. His final act as music director will be at George Wein’s Centennial Celebration at City Winery in New York City before stepping down officially.
Denver Jazz Fest: Brandee Younger Takes Center Stage
The Denver Jazz Festival is set to open with a bang, featuring Grammy-nominated harpist Brandee Younger. Known for bridging the gap between past and present, Younger pays homage to jazz legends Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane through her latest album “Gadabout Season,” recorded on Coltrane’s harp. As a 2025 Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, she continues to push boundaries with an extensive international tour. Denver audiences can catch her performance at Dazzle on October 28, marking the start of the festival’s second annual celebration.
Additional Highlights
The festival circuit also buzzes with other exciting performances, including The Colorado Mambo Orchestra and Three Visitor, adding diversity to the lineup. As jazz continues its dynamic journey, these festivals and artists remain pivotal in nurturing its growth and evolution.
