Brantford Author Chronicles Young Lives Amid Ukraine’s Conflict

In the heart of Brantford, author Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch brings to light a poignant narrative through her latest children’s book. The sequel in an evocative trilogy, it delves into the harrowing experiences of twin sisters caught amidst the tumultuous war in Ukraine. This work emerges as part of Skrypuch’s profound commitment to narrating stories that illuminate the struggles faced by young individuals during times of conflict.

Skrypuch’s narrative journey began when she received an invitation from Scholastic to craft a trilogy exploring themes of resilience and hope set against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite initial reservations, her passion for storytelling led her to accept this daunting yet meaningful challenge. Over 17 months, Skrypuch dedicated herself tirelessly—writing seven hours daily—to bring life to three full novels that vividly capture the essence of survival and perseverance.

The trilogy opens with “Kidnapped From Ukraine: Under Attack,” released in January 2025. It introduces readers to Dariia and Rada, twins whose lives are abruptly disrupted by bombings in Mariupol. Separated from their family, Dariia is taken to a Russian filtration camp, leading her on a harrowing path through re-education camps and into the life of a Russian family.

The sequel, “Kidnapped From Ukraine: Standoff,” shifts focus to Rada as she navigates the grim realities within the bunkers at the Azovstal Steel Plant during an intense 86-day siege. Skrypuch draws on her extensive background in crafting historical fiction from a child’s perspective, often set against World War II backdrops, and applies this lens to the contemporary war in Ukraine.

Through these vividly detailed accounts, Skrypuch strives not only to enlighten young readers about current global events but also to foster empathy. Her work challenges misconceptions about youth comprehension of complex issues, asserting that even the youngest minds can grasp and empathize with profound human experiences.

The authenticity of Skrypuch’s narratives is underscored by her meticulous attention to detail—each element from weather conditions to personal accounts is grounded in reality. This careful blend of historical fiction and contemporary storytelling aims to offer readers a window into Ukraine’s present-day struggles without compromising the safety of those whose stories inspired them.

In celebration of this impactful work, Skrypuch will host a book launch at Harmony Church in Brantford on October 9. Coordinated by the Ukrainian Village, the event promises an opportunity for attendees to engage with the author and support humanitarian efforts through the sale of her books, with proceeds aiding the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.

Through this trilogy, Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch not only continues her legacy as a best-selling historical thriller writer but also serves as a voice for those caught in the shadows of conflict. Her stories stand as a testament to resilience and the enduring human spirit amidst adversity.
