Ukraine’s War Through the Eyes of Children: A Trilogy by Brantford Author
In the heart of Brantford, a best-selling author, Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch, unveils her second novel in an evocative trilogy that captures the harrowing experiences of young people amidst Ukraine’s ongoing war. This series, born out of a poignant request from Scholastic shortly after Russia’s invasion began, seeks to bridge understanding and empathy towards the plight faced by countless Ukrainians.
Skrypuch, whose Ukrainian-Canadian roots infuse her storytelling with authenticity and depth, embarked on an intense writing journey upon accepting this significant challenge. Within 17 months, she penned three novels, dedicating seven hours daily, immersing herself in a narrative that demands attention and reflection.
The first book, released in January 2025, titled “Kidnapped From Ukraine: Under Attack,” introduces us to twin sisters Dariia and Rada during the terrifying Russian bombings of Mariupol. The story unfolds as Dariia is torn from her family and thrust into a filtration camp, only to be further displaced to a re-education facility before being placed with a Russian family.
The second installment, “Kidnapped From Ukraine: Standoff,” shifts focus to Rada’s survival in the Azovstal Steel Plant bunkers amidst an 86-day siege. This narrative not only continues the sisters’ ordeal but also invites readers to witness the resilience and determination of those trapped within the conflict’s grasp.
Skrypuch, renowned for her historical thrillers that explore war from a child’s perspective, believes in the power of young minds to comprehend complex situations. Her works aim to dismantle misconceptions about youth’s capacity to understand global crises. Through vivid storytelling, she aspires to foster empathy and awareness regarding Ukraine’s current reality.
Each book is meticulously crafted based on survivor accounts, ensuring authenticity while protecting identities. “Everything in the book happened,” Skrypuch affirms, emphasizing her commitment to historical accuracy woven into contemporary fiction.
The launch of the second book takes place at Harmony Church in Brantford on October 9th, organized by the Ukrainian Village community. Beyond the literary event, this occasion serves as a conduit for support, with proceeds benefiting the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.
Skrypuch’s work transcends mere storytelling; it is an act of solidarity and remembrance, providing voice to those silenced by war. Her trilogy stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, urging readers to not only witness but also empathize with Ukraine’s ongoing struggle for peace.
